Celebs go Von Dutch

IT’S the Von style-conscious celebs want to be seen in.

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, rapper Jay-Z and Halle Berry are just some of the big names hooked on the hip LA clothes brand Von Dutch.

Pop star Justin Timberlake kicked off its fame when he wore a Von Dutch trucker’s cap to last year’s Grammy party.

Within weeks actor Ashton Kutcher and singers Fred Durst and Gwen Stefani were also wearing the label on wide-brimmed, foam-billed headgear US lorry drivers have worn for years — though their Von Dutch versions cost £50.

Madonna and son Rocco have been snapped in the caps, Britney got married in one and Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell wear T-shirts bearing the logo. All designs are limited edition

The greaser-chic label is now big business — even though its creator has been dead for 12 years.

Californian Kenny Howard — nicknamed “Dutch” by his family for being “as stubborn as a Dutchman” — was a custom car king big in the 50s and 60s.

He hated fame and it was only after his death in 1992, aged 63, that the Von Dutch Originals brand was formed.

His two daughters sold the rights to their dad’s name to entrepreneur Michael Cassel.

The amount is a secret but Cassel certainly got a good deal.

Last year the brand sold merchandise to the value of £18.6m, including jeans, T-shirts and even knickers at £15 a go.

And it is going from strength to strength — watches, sunglasses and “celebrity-only” sample shops are set to be introduced in the next year.
