When Robbie Williams signed the most lucrative music deal in British recording history he screamed: "I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams." In the first year of the estimated £80million five-album contract, signed in October 2002, he received £17.5 million out of profits from recordings and tours.

Now it has emerged that the former Take That singer has taken a vast pay cut during a "rest" between albums. Accounts filed at Companies House reveal that Williams, 30, paid himself "only" £2 million in the year to the end of March last year.

Music industry insiders say the downturn in Williams's pay from the £26 million he earned the previous year is probably due to the timing of his album releases. The first album under the EMI deal, Escapology, was released in November 2002. The most recent, Greatest Hits, was not launched until October last year.

Williams's main activity in the intervening financial year was his European tour, which culminated in an extraordinary trio of open-air concerts at Knebworth attended by more than 400,000 fans. A Live At Knebworth DVD and back-catalogue sales will also have kept the money rolling in.

He remains one of the better paid artists in British music, although his earnings would count as little more than pocket money to rock's most elevated aristocrats. According to separate figures, in the Sunday Times Pay List for 2003, Sir Paul McCartney made £40million. The Rolling Stones collectively earned an estimated £45million during their last world tour.

Today's figures for Williams were revealed by his private firm, In Good Company, in which he has a 75 per cent stake and EMI a 25 per cent holding. The company describes its activities as "the music writing, recording, performing and touring activities of the artist Robbie Williams".

Its figures show that his recordings, videos, DVDs and concert tours still generated £22.1million of sales in a "rest" year, down 35 per cent on the £34.9 million of the previous 12 months.

As well as royalties for Williams, the company paid out just over £2million to EMI, down from £22.6million the previous year.

The complex contract is structured so that Williams makes vast sums if the records sell well but puts tough limits on his earnings if they bomb.

So far the two albums released under the contract have both proved huge sellers.

Escapology has sold more than six million copies and the Greatest Hits album was the second biggest seller of last year despite the October release.

However, he has often appeared not to enjoy his vast wealth, once saying: "Money is nothing to do with happiness. Sometimes I feel like cashing everything in and giving it all away."

But the huge success of the Greatest Hits album, plus the release of his autobiography Feel, means 2005 is likely to be another bumper year for Williams.

No one from his management company, IE Music, which Williams paid more than £200,000 last year, was available for comment. The company is still closed for the Christmas break. EMI did not comment.

das kann man wohl sagen.
egal welche zeitung (mal ausgenommen die diversen schwulen magazine), die haben alle immer nen bloeden kommentar fuer rob. aber nun gut, so ist die englishe presse halt.
und rein privat werde ich immer schoen belaechelt mit meiner rob obsession - selbst bei mir in der uni gibts gerne nen doofen kommentar in unseren lectures und dabei studier ich COMMERCIAL music!! wenn rob keine commercial music ist, dann weiss ich auch nicht weiter... lol.
