Der zweimalige Formel-1-Weltmeister Mika Häkkinen über seine Zukunftspläne, Reformen für die DTM und die Weisheiten seiner Kinder
Der Finne Mika Häkkinen (37) ist der unumstrittenen Star der Deutschen Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). WELT-Redakteur Matthias Brzezinski sprach mit dem zweimaligen Formel-1-Weltmeister über seinen Beruf als Rennfahrer, warum er stets gut gelaunt ist, den Traum von einer Rolle in einem Kinofilm und über die Möglichkeiten, von Kindern zu lernen.

Die Welt: Herr Häkkinen, Sie sind in Deutschland nicht ausschließlich durch Ihre Erfolge in der Formel 1 populär, sondern auch durch Ihre Fernseh-Werbespots mit Boris Becker, David Coulthard oder Ihrer Frau Erja. Könnten Sie sich vorstellen, später einmal in einem Kinofilm eine Rolle zu übernehmen?

Mika Häkkinen: Das könnte ich mir nicht nur vorstellen, das ist definitiv ein Traum, den ich mir unbedingt erfüllen möchte.

Welt: Schwebt Ihnen da ein bestimmtes Genre vor?

Häkkinen: Es ist ohne konkreten Anlaß schwer, mich da festzulegen, aber ich glaube so eine Mischung aus Humor und Action wäre das Richtige.

Welt: Vor der Erfüllung Ihres Traumes steht der Alltag in der DTM. Bislang bestimmen weitgehend erfahrene Piloten wie Ihr Mercedes-Teamkollege Bernd Schneider, Audi-Pilot Tom Kristensen und Sie die Pace. Spielen Disziplin und Konsequenz eine entscheidende Rolle?

Häkkinen: Definitiv. Und man muß darüber hinaus immer die Ruhe bewahren und gleichzeitig extrem entschlossen sein, zu gewinnen. Ich denke, es ist etwas zu früh in der Saison, um das schon abschließend zu beurteilen. Aber es gibt sicher nicht nur einen Grund, sondern ein Zusammenspiel aus verschiedenen Fakten. Ganz wichtig: Du mußt aus Kritik lernen, selbst wenn es schwer fällt.

Welt: Das klingt nach der Weisheit: Man lernt nie aus.

Häkkinen: Exakt das ist es. Und das gilt auch abseits von der Arbeit. Du mußt in deinem ganzen Leben entscheiden, was gut ist. Dazu muß man bereit sein, zu lernen - immer.

Welt: Sie sind mit zwei Weltmeistertiteln, deren Stellenwert nicht zu übertreffen ist, aus der Formel 1 in die DTM gekommen. Was bliebe da an Wertschätzung für eine Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft?

Häkkinen: Sagen wir es mal so: Wann immer ich Sport treibe, möchte ich gewinnen. Das war auch als Junge so, und das gilt auch für die Freizeit. Klappt es, dann ist es ein schöner Spaß, dann war es ein Vergnügen. Wenn du aber auf dem jeweils höchstmöglichen Niveau deinem Beruf nachgehst, dann ist das kein Spiel mehr, sondern ein echter Kampf. Und wenn du dann gewinnst, dann ist das echte Befriedigung.

Welt: Sehen Sie sich eher als Einzelkämpfer oder Teamspieler?

Häkkinen: Motorsport ist immer Teamwork und je höher man steigt, desto wichtiger ist, daß das Team perfekt funktioniert. Das ist in der Formel 1 wie in der DTM gleich.

Welt: Können Sie Streß schnell abbauen, sich ohne großen Zeitverzug entspannen?

Häkkinen: Ich glaube, daß mir das gut gelingt. Wobei es ganz klar davon abhängt, in welcher Situation man sich gerade befindet. Nach einem guten Training ist man schneller relaxed als nach einem schlechten.

Welt: Sie haben in Ihren Beruf Zielstrebigkeit und konsequentes Handeln gezeigt. Gelingt Ihnen das auch innerhalb der Familie? Können Sie Ihrem fünfjährigen Sohn Hugo aus Vernunftgründen einen Wunsch verwehren?

Häkkinen: Ich habe es mir angewöhnt, über solche Entscheidungen gründlich nachzudenken. Und ich versuche, mich in die Kids hineinzuversetzen, zu fragen, warum sie manche Sachen sehen, wie sie sie sehen. So kann ich sie fördern, ihnen Mut machen. Ich will, daß sich dadurch alle immer möglichst gut fühlen. Das gilt für die ganze Familie. Aber selbstverständlich gibt es für die Kinder (Sohn Hugo und Tochter Aina, d. Red.) auch klare Grenzen.

Welt: Glauben Sie, daß man von Kindern auch lernen kann?

Häkkinen: Ja, vor allem, wenn man sich für die Angelegenheiten der Kids interessiert, wissen will, was gerade läuft. Kinder empfinden viele Dinge anders als Erwachsene. Wenn man sich damit beschäftigt, kann man davon lernen.

Welt: Lassen Ihr Beruf und die Familie Ihnen Zeit, sich mit anderen Dingen zu beschäftigen? Beispielsweise Kultur oder Politik?

Häkkinen: Ich bin kein politischer Mensch, aber ich verfolge die Dinge schon. Sowohl in meiner Heimat Finnland, als auch in Monaco, wo ich lebe. Was ich wirklich liebe, ist das Lesen. Nicht nur Romane, sondern auch Sachbücher oder Biographien. Und historische Werke.

Welt: Wie wichtig ist es Ihnen, Emotionen zu empfinden und sie auch zu zeigen?

Häkkinen: Bei meiner Arbeit mit den Ingenieuren oder den Mechanikern sind immer Emotionen mit im Spiel. Aber ich zeige sie nicht übermäßig nach außen. Vieles verrät jedoch die Körpersprache.

Welt: Bei den Zuschauern gelten Sie als ein Mann, der immer gute Laune versprüht, der eine positive Einstellung hat.

Häkkinen: Das ist etwas, was ich vermutlich von meinen Vorfahren und besonders von meinen Eltern geerbt habe. Wenn ich mich umschaue, wieviel negative Dinge in der Welt passieren, dann bin ich dankbar, daß ich mein Leben genießen kann. Ich habe eine tolle Familie, einen tollen Job. Das sind hinreichend Gründe, gut gelaunt zu sein. Aber auch wenn ich Dinge nicht ändern kann, brauche ich keine schlechte Laune zu haben. Ich würde mich nie über Regen ärgern - nur weil er mir gerade nicht ins Konzept paßt. Ich könnte ihn doch nicht abstellen. Also ist das auch kein Grund, miese Stimmung zu zeigen.

Welt: Zurück zur DTM. Bislang geht es noch knapp zu zwischen Mercedes und Audi. Glauben Sie, daß dieses relative Gleichgewicht während der gesamten Saison Bestand haben wird?

Häkkinen: Das ist eine schwierige Frage, weil so viele Komponenten eine Rolle spielen, ob man ein gutes Auto hat oder nicht. Beide Hersteller bewegen sich auf einem enorm hohen Niveau. Rein aus Fahrersicht wäre es mir natürlich lieber, wenn es nicht so eng zugehen würde.

Welt: Würde es Ihnen gefallen, wenn die DTM sich internationaler präsentieren könnte? Beispielsweise sechs Rennen in Deutschland und sechs auf verschiedenen europäischen Strecken?

Häkkinen: Das ist vorrangig ein Marketing-Problem. Wieder nur aus Fahrersicht betrachtet, wäre es toll. Aber dazu müssen viele Dinge zusammenspielen.

Welt: Worin liegt für Sie die größte Stärke der DTM?

Häkkinen:Sie bietet einen unglaublich harten Wettbewerb auf extrem hohem Niveau. Das gilt für die involvierten Fahrer genauso wie für die Autos. 99 Prozent reichen nie um vorn zu sein, du brauchst immer 100.

Welt: Und wenn Sie einen Änderungswunsch frei hätten?

Häkkinen:Einfach gesagt: Je mehr Autos auf der Strecke sind, je mehr Action wird geboten. Die Herausforderung für jeden Fahrer wird dadurch größer, und der Spaß steigt auch.

Hakkinen to test McLaren in Spain

1998 and 1999 World Champion Mika Hakkinen will test a McLaren Mercedes when the winter period kicks off at Circuit de Catalunya this week, according to newspaper reports in Spain.
The 38-year-old Finn left Formula One in 2001, but returned last year to the DTM touring car series and has in recent days been doing laps in the Woking based team's computer simulator.
Ron Dennis admitted this week that Hakkinen is 'keen to contribute' to McLaren's F1 programme.
The Team Principal added: "On the basis that Kimi (Raikkonen) and Juan Pablo Montoya not being available and not being appropriate to the work we are doing for next year, Mika can evaluate some of the things we are developing and bringing to the car."
Spain's Diario As contends that McLaren 'intend to take advantage of (Hakkinen's) experience with Bridgestone tyres' at the test.
The newspaper did not say on which of the three days in Barcelona Hakkinen would test.
The sports daily Marca, meanwhile, headlined the latest Hakkinen rumour as predicting that the Finn is going to be McLaren's 'sport advisor' in 2007.
Hakkinen, at the McLaren factory again this week, was quoted as saying: "It is just rumours. It is still my objective to be in the DTM but if McLaren asks me to help them then I am very happy to do that."
Dennis, meanwhile, reportedly said: "Mika's presence is going to be very important. He is incredibly enthusiastic, he knows this team inside-out and is going to help us to develop the car."

Double World Champion Mika Hakkinen will drive a Team McLaren Mercedes Formula One car for the first time since the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix on Thursday when he will conduct a day's testing at the Circuit de Catalunya. This will constitute part of the team's winter testing programme in preparation for the 2007 season in which Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton will be competing for the team.

Hakkinen asked for the opportunity to re-familiarise himself with a Formula One car, and the team will use this test to benefit from Hakkinen's experience and obtain his feedback with regards to changes in downforce, engine and tyres following the regulatory changes which have occurred since he last drove a Formula One car.

Since retiring from Formula One, Hakkinen has remained an integral part of the Mercedes family by competing in the DTM Touring Car Championship as a works driver for Mercedes-Benz with an AMG Mercedes C Class. Only last week the links were further strengthened when Mika was announced as an ambassador for Johnnie Walker – a long-term commercial partner of Team McLaren Mercedes.

"I'm really excited about driving a Team McLaren Mercedes Formula One car again and to be re-engaging with the team," said the 38-year-old Finn. "I have followed the Formula One World Championship closely since my retirement at the end of the 2001 season, but it was when I was at this year's Brazilian Grand Prix as a guest of the team that I really felt I would like to get a chance to drive a Formula One car again. I have recently spent some time in Team McLaren Mercedes' simulator in Woking and to get the possibility to drive the MP4-21 is something I'm really looking forward to. I would like to thank Ron and Norbert for making this happen. This test is a chance for me to see how much Formula One cars have advanced and experience first hand what they are like to drive today as well as providing the team with some feedback on various aspects of the car's performance."

"We are delighted to provide Mika with the opportunity to drive a Formula One car again," said Ron Dennis, Team Principal of Team McLaren Mercedes.
"He is really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a current Formula One car. A driver of Mika's calibre and experience can only bring added value to our testing programme and his feedback after Thursday's running will be valuable to the team in our preparations for the 2007 season. However at this stage there are no plans for Mika to conduct further tests for the team."

"Mika has always been a very important part of the McLaren Mercedes family," said Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. "With his two Formula One World Championship titles and 20 Grand Prix wins for the team he has contributed a lot to the success of the McLaren Mercedes Formula One team. Everybody in the team is happy to see him at the wheel of a Team McLaren Mercedes Formula One car again and we look forward to some interesting comments. However nobody should draw the conclusion that Mika will switch back to Formula One after this test."

The team has been testing at Circuit de Catalunya since Tuesday with Hamilton and de la Rosa. Hakkinen will take over from de la Rosa on the Thursday. The Barcelona test will be followed by two additional tests in Jerez, Spain before Christmas.

Today saw the launch of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ 2007 Formula One car in Valencia, and the return to the sport of double world champion Mika Hakkinen in a new role: Responsible Drinking Ambassador for the JOHNNIE WALKER® Formula One sponsorship programme.

Diageo is the world’s leading premium drinks company and their number one whisky brand, JOHNNIE WALKER®, is a partner of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. In his new role, Mika Hakkinen will help to promote an anti drink-driving message to the largest possible audience around the world through Formula One.

Today's launch event marks the start of the 2007 Responsible Drinking campaign and begins a programme of activities in Diageo’s key markets, using Formula One as a platform from which to communicate Responsible Drinking messages.

“I am of course delighted to return to the world of Formula One in this new role. I will apply the same commitment to this exciting challenge as I have done throughout my career, to help raise awareness about responsible drinking,” explains Hakkinen.

“In its simplest form, responsible drinking means that people need to be accountable for their own safety and that of those around them; whether this means not drinking alcohol on an evening out if you are planning to drive, or appointing one of your friends to be the designated driver for the journey home. It may sound simple, but unfortunately there are still people who think it is acceptable to drink and drive and I am determined to do all I can to help change these attitudes.”

The launch of the Responsible Drinking campaign in Valencia was marked by a ‘Pitstop’ event in the City of Arts and Science complex. Hakkinen was joined by Vodafone McLaren Mercedes test driver and local hero Pedro de la Rosa to hand out water and raise awareness of Responsible Drinking issues to the crowds, who came to see Fernando Alonso driving the new Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-22.

Today’s event and the rollout of the global Responsible Drinking campaign follows on from the success activities throughout 2006. In Latin America, de la Rosa played a key role in delivering important messages during the Piloto de Vez (‘Designated Driver’) campaign. Häkkinen: "McLaren-Mercedes könnte überraschen"

Für den Ex-Formel-1-Weltmeister ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis auch McLaren-Mercedes wieder Grands Prix gewinnen wird

(Motorsport-Total.com) - In Melbourne war Ferrari noch unantastbar, doch eine rot dominierte Saison muss nicht folgen, glaubt Ex-Formel-1-Weltmeister Mika Häkkinen. Gerade seinem Ex-Team McLaren-Mercedes traut er zu, schon bald auch auf die Siegerstraße einzubiegen - erstmals seit Japan 2005. Ein Garant für den Erfolg sei dabei Weltmeister Fernando Alonso.
Wenn man sich im Team auf die nötige Arbeit konzentriere, "werden auch die Siege kommen", wird Häkkinen von der 'As' zitiert. Als Chance sieht der Finne die Regelumstellungen für das Jahr 2007. "McLaren wird zur Überraschung des Jahres werden. Die Regeländerungen werden für eine starke Saison sorgen."

In Häkkinens Brust schlagen dabei zwei Herzen: eines für sein Ex-Team und eines für seinen Landsmann Kimi Räikkönen. Dass dieser zu Ferrari wechselte, sei aber keine Garantie für größere Chancen auf den Titelgewinn. "Auch ich hatte bei McLaren meine Zweifel, aber sie haben mich motiviert, bis der Sieg kam", erklärte er.

"Kimi ist zu Ferrari gegangen, noch ehe diese Situation entstehen konnte, aber ich glaube, dass sich McLaren in diesem Jahr sehr gut schlagen wird", fuhr der DTM-Pilot fort, der auch McLaren-Teamchef Ron Dennis als Erfolgsgaranten ansieht. "Er ist ein sehr loyaler Mensch, er wird Fernando viel Unterstützung geben."
